Alexis Robinson About the Artist "In this moment, I’m aware, living as I do in the world, that I am an atom in the universe, possessing infinite possibilities of development. And I want to explore these possibilities" - Hilma Af Klint I create out of necessity; I know I will never be satisfied with the human condition without exploration and desperate attempts to capture visual memories of perception and worldly experiences. For hundreds of years artists served as the primary documenters, painting and capturing moments of action and importance. With the advent of photography that all changed, and now with the rise of AI my generation of artists is faced with similar challenges. As a collective we all now must ask ourselves, "If design and documentation have now been automated how can we, as artists, retain our importance and integrity in this new world?" For half a decade, I have been infatuated with the automatic drawing principles pioneered by Hilma Af Klint in the 19th and 20th century, a practice that deeply relies on the artist's mental state and experiences with their environment, something which cannot be synthetically reproduced. Her work alongside other artists such as Hyman Bloom influences and informs my process of documentation and creation. My work is dependent on the experiences of memories and their ever-changing form within our consciousness. Visual memory is our weak point as humans, we are far better at remembering smells, taste, and texture than more fleeting subject matter. We rarely, if ever, remember events in true accuracy, but instead will remember an aura of the event often out of order or completely incorrect. Human memory and mental health take forefront in my works, my subjects are never as they truly appear, and instead take on a dream-like quality reminiscent of psychological after-imagining, post-stimulus abstraction, dreams, and distorted perceptions of comfort. My work represents my experiences trying to recall, quantify, and document memories which have gone unrecorded, without concern for historical accuracy relying on the memory alone. I paint what I see when I close my eyes and dream- remembering and reliving my world. My artistic process is one of change but in regard to the unchangeable. I graduated from the University of Rochester in 2021 with my Bachelors in Studio Art, a minor in Psychology, and concentration in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. I strongly believe in the power of education and know that I would not be the creator I am today without my teachers and education. In 2022 I relocated to Seattle where I now reside and work as an artist and educator in the city.
